Sandra Phillips

Sandra Phillips is an American figurative and modern abstract artist who studied at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA. At the academy she spent five years studying classical drawing and painting. Sandra also spent a year at the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science in their Design Program. Her pieces are acrylic and/or collage exploring the construction of space. When Phillips is creating a painting, she is always thinking about manipulating the paint with value and line quality making her marks to create a dynamic feeling of space. Her early works were all figurative but most recently her interest is in abstraction. The language of painting is the same no matter what movement or style is created. Her understanding and command of the language is evident in her paintings.

She has been influenced by a variety of contemporary painters to include, Joan Mitchell, Jade Fadojutimi, Cecily Brown and Chantal Joffe. Her inspiration in the past has been her family and friends. They kept her busy painting portraiture and figurative pieces. But now the space outside her studio window in Georgetown, D.C. or her imagination is what is so intoxicating when creating.
